Age Calculator
Our Age Calculator makes it quick and easy to calculate the precise difference between your date of birth and the current date — or between any two dates.
Understanding How Age Is Calculated – Cultural Differences & Date Logic
Our age calculator online uses the most widely accepted method of calculating age—commonly followed in most Western countries. In this system, a person’s age increases on their birthday. For example, if someone is 3 years and 11 months old, their age is still considered 3 until their next birthday, when it becomes 4.
Age Calculation in Different Cultures
It’s important to note that age is calculated differently across cultures:
- In some traditions, age is counted including the current year. So, someone who is 20 years old in the Western system might be considered to be in their 21st year elsewhere.
- In a traditional Chinese age system, a person is considered to be 1 year old at birth, and age increases every Chinese New Year, not on their birthday. For example, a baby born just a day before the Chinese New Year may be considered 2 years old just two days after birth.
Why Age Results May Vary Slightly
When using our age calculator online, you might notice some variation in results, especially with months and days, depending on how dates fall:
- From February 20 to March 20 is typically counted as one month.
- But from February 28, 2022, to March 31, 2022, two valid interpretations exist: a) One month and 3 days (if Feb 28 to Mar 28 is considered a full month). b) One month (if both dates are treated as the end of the month).
This happens because months have different lengths. Similar cases occur with dates like April 30 to May 31 or May 30 to June 30.
Our age calculator online uses the former method—counting from a specific date to the same date in the next month wherever possible, for more consistency and user clarity.
